update: More than 600 Roots & Shoots youth members throughout California  presented inspiring environmental projects today, September 19, 2010 marking their support for the United Nations International Day of Peace and celebrating Roots & Shoots 8th annual day of peace. The day long free event included flying giant peace dove puppets, live concert performances, activities for kids, peace souvenirs and more.

Festival-goers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Day of Peace Food Drive for People and Pets. Donations will be distributed by Westside Food Bank to local social service agencies that assist individuals, families, and pets in need.

Roots & Shoots members and celebrity guests will later join in the festival’s annual Peace Dove Parade -flying a collection of more than 100 hand-made giant peace doves in a brilliant display of performance art along the Santa Monica Pier.

History of Roots & Shoots Day of Peace:

The history of Roots & Shoots Day of Peace began in 1981, the year United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 36/67 declaring an International Day of Peace. Subsequently, in 2001, the General Assembly passed Resolution 55/282 which designated September 21 as the yearly International Day of Peace. The intention for the U.N. in these actions was to have the entire world spend a day in peace and free of violence. Read More.
