17 Sep 2009Inauguration of the Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus, new 66,000 square foot state-of-the-art “green” maintenance facility on September 23, 2009, once again highlights the Santa Monica city‘s and Big Blue Bus continued commitment to addressing and adapting sustainable and eco-friendly approaches to the city. This grand event is open to the public and will feature self-guided tours, a large display of vintage photos covering the past 80 years of the Big Blue Bus, a special 3-D video presentation about the project and a variety of equipment demonstrations from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm at the Big Blue Bus facility, located at the corner of Colorado Avenue and 7th Street.
About the Project: The project was completed over a period of nine years, within the allocated budget and time.It utilizes latest sustainable transit maintenance technologies including 600 photovoltaic roof-mounted panels, motion-activated lighting, recycled concrete and steel, and an illuminated art wall that simulates movement along its glass skin. HOK, an internationally recognized leader in sustainable design, served as the facility’s architect, while the Morley Construction Company was awarded the contract to build the project.
