The Big Blue Bus is in full swing now to begin the next phase of its bus stop redevelopment project, after the city council gave it a green signal on January 19, 2010.

Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) a Los Angeles based design firm has been awarded the contract for designing the project which includes replacement and enhancement of all 360 bus stops around the city. Pegged at $6.9 million, the project will receive $3 million from Federal Transit Administration funds and $2.5 from stimulus funds while the remaining $1.4 million funding will be provided by the Big Blue Bus.

Santa Monica residents will get to see the first new bus stop in place by the end of this year. All the new bus stops will have a simplified Big Blue Bus system map, localized map showing areas within walking or biking distance, listing of all bus lines, estimated travel time and ID number that will allow riders to access next bus arrival information via cell phone.

Locations which experience medium and high passenger pattern will also have real time bus arrival information, well lit and shaded structures, seating, trash and recycling containers. In addition all the bus stops will have a no smoking sign – a move which furthers strengthens city’s commitment towards its environment and health of its residents.

Big Blue Bus is having a series of community meetings to discuss several Big Blue Bus projects and initiatives for 2010.
